Steve Fine
President
Melanoma Education Foundation

Steve Fine, President of the Melanoma Education Foundation, attended colleges in the Boston area, receiving a doctorate in chemistry from Northeastern University. He then moved to Pennsylvania, completing a year of postdoctoral research at Lehigh University. After 5 years as Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, he moved back to New England where he served in technical and management positions in high tech chemical companies.

In 1989 he started a consulting practice in the technology of high purity chemical manufacturing, concurrently serving for 3 years as Vice President of Technology for ACSI, a West Coast manufacturer of semiconductor chemicals.

Shortly after his son, Dan, died of melanoma in 1998 at the age of 26, he founded the non-profit Melanoma Education Foundation and, since August of 2001, has devoted full time to the Foundation.

The primary activity of the Foundation is educating high school and middle school wellness teachers about melanoma skin cancer and providing them with free online lessons to educate their students about self-detecting melanoma while it is curable. At last count over 1700 schools in all 50 states were using the lessons.

The Membership Public Relations Committee
will meet prior to our meeting at 11:25 a.m.

Thank you
Bruce and Nina Jackim generously hosted a fun backyard barbecue at their home in Middleburg Heights, giving all of our members the opportunity to meet and mingle with Wisdom Addo, a Rotary International Peace Scholar and the Founder of the West Africa Centre for Peace Foundation.

Rotary After Hours September 29th
Our Rotary After Hours September 29th will be at the Merrick House, attending their open house, hearing from Executive Director Harriet Hadley, also a member of our club,  and seeing first hand the result of our financial support and volunteer efforts towards the Sensory Garden that was installed this summer.
 Santa's Hide-A-Way Hollow

We have been invited by Santa and Mrs. Claus themselves to participate in the last Santa’s Hideaway Hollow event of the year; it will take place on Saturday, September 17, 9 am – 3 pm; we will have the opportunity to see Santa’s Hideaway Hollow in action, they are expecting a large crowd (est. 250-300 people).

Santa’s Hideaway Hollow provides service to sick kids and their families who want to spend one last Christmas together…Santa has built a North Pole Village in Middlefield, Ohio on 100 acres of land, including a train, carousel, cabins, ice cream parlor, chapel, and an area where kids will visit privately with Santa…over the years, Santa has provided compassionate service to 200,000+ people.  Santa has spoken for our club twice, the last time was Christmas 2020, where we did a virtual live and filmed program…very moving…

We can bring up to 10 people, and these slots will fill up quickly…there will be a pre-program team meeting that morning at 9:15 am to discuss the plan for the day, including volunteer activities…or, you are welcome to just go out and observe.
Please RSVP to rotarycle@gmail.com by  Friday, September 2nd!
